2012 WORLD MALARIA DAY CELEBRATION

World Malaria Day is commemorated every year on the 25th of April.   This year’s World Malaria Day Celebration at the National Level will be hosted by Rivers State on the 4th of May, 2012. Also, as a result of the pace-setting achievements of the Rivers State Government in the Malaria Control Programme which have been duly recognized nationally and internationally, and by the WHO and other International Agencies, the World Malaria Day Celebration in the ECOWAS sub-region which was earlier scheduled to hold in Cote D’ivoire is now rescheduled to hold in Rivers State on the same day. Thereafter, the state will host a health activity organised by ECOWAS on the 5th of May, 2012. The programme of events on the 4th May 2012 includes a Rally, Novelty Football Match, Launch of Focus Nigeria, Tug-of-War, Investiture of Malaria Ambassador in Nigeria and Launch of Advocacy kits.

Committee To Review Health Laws in Rivers State Inaugurated

The Honourable Commissioner for health Dr. Tamunoiyoriari Parker has inaugurated a committee to review some health laws of Rivers State.The terms of reference of the Committee are to review and make recommendations to the following laws/bills: i) Rivers State Public Health Law of 1999 ii) Rivers State College of Health Science and Technology Law No. 3 of 2001 iii) Rivers State Primary Health Care Management Board Law No. 10 of 2010 iv) The Drat Rivers State College of Nursing Bill 2012 v) Rivers State Hospitals Management Board Edit of 1991 vi) The Draft Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital Bill 2011 vii) The Rivers State Health & Allied Establishments Regulatory Authority Law No. 5 of 2000 (to be reviewed and incorporated into Public Health Law)   Members of the Committee are: 1. Pan African Health Foundation Auto-Disable Syringe Factory Receives WHO Certification

The Rivers state Government owned Pan African Health foundation Auto-Disable Syringe Factory has received the World Health Organizations (WHO) Prequalification, accredited and certified as a manufacturer of syringes that meet the highest international quality and safety standards. Rivers State Health Commissioner Dr. Tamunoiyoriari parker stated this while playing host to the Director- General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Mr. Paul Orhi who visited the factory to congratulate the state on the achievement of this feat in Port Harcourt. According to Dr. Parker this is the first and only World Health Organization  pre-qualified manufacturer in Nigeria (and the whole of West and Central Africa Region), the second company in the whole of Africa, and only the sixteenth company in the World.
