The goal of training midwives include the millennium development goals 4 and 5, reduction in child mortality and improved maternal health in which midwives play a prominent role. It is stipulated that by the year 2015 maternal deaths must be reduced to a minimum of 75%. However, barriers militating against training of midwives in Rivers State may make this percentage to be far reaching.
ü The Rivers state is to establish more than one midwifery training school to meet up with needed manpower in our rural communities and hospitals to reduce the alarming rate of maternal/infant mortality and morbidity in our state.
ü Amendment of the law establishing the college of health science and technology that includes schools of Nursing and midwifery so that training would be smooth.
ü Performance plan include putting more pressure on the government to hasten the above strategic plan as we have enough professionals to take up the training of midwives at higher scientific levels.
